Perimenopause and Its Symptoms

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause when a woman's body starts to produce less estrogen. It usually begins in the 40s but can start earlier or later. Every woman is different! This phase can last anywhere from a few years to over a decade before menopause officially occurs (which is marked by 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period).

Signs and Symptoms of Perimenopause

Perimenopause is driven by fluctuating hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, leading to various symptoms, including:

  • Irregular periods – cycles may become longer, shorter, heavier, or lighter.

  • Hot flashes and night sweats – sudden feelings of heat and excessive sweating, often disrupting sleep.

  • Mood swings and irritability – increased anxiety, depression, or emotional sensitivity.

  • Sleep disturbances – difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

  • Fatigue – feeling constantly tired or sluggish.

  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort – leading to pain during intercourse.

  • Decreased libido – reduced sexual desire.

  • Brain fog and memory issues – trouble concentrating and forgetfulness.

  • Weight gain and metabolism changes – increased difficulty managing weight.

How to Manage Perimenopause Symptoms

While perimenopause is a natural process, there are ways to manage symptoms and maintain overall well-being:

1. Healthy Diet and Nutrition

Eating a balanced diet rich in whole foods, fiber, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help support hormone balance. Foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, like dairy products, leafy greens, and fatty fish, support bone health.

2. Regular Exercise

Exercise helps regulate mood, improve sleep, and maintain a healthy weight. Strength training, yoga, and cardio workouts can be particularly beneficial during perimenopause.

3. Stress Management

Practicing mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing techniques can reduce stress levels and help with mood swings and sleep disturbances.

4. Hormone Therapy and Supplements

Some women find relief through hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but it’s important to discuss the risks and benefits with a healthcare provider. At Advanced Wellness & Health, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is one of our specialities. We also offer an array of supplements to support the body during the perimenopausal phase.

5. Sleep Hygiene

Creating a sleep-friendly environment, limiting caffeine and screen time before bed, and establishing a relaxing bedtime routine can improve sleep quality. Improved sleep quality can help the body regulate it's hormones.
